I have finally completed my first project it has taken so long, but I have reached the end and I love the way it looks. I put the plastic bottles on it, but not without troubles. First we tried melting it to the back board, but the plastic only curled not melted. After a long try and some broken glass I gave up on having the plastic exposed. Instead I smushed the plastic between two pieces of glass and put that between the cardboard and the back board. I then put a wire on the back. I have started thinking about my next project and I would like to use toilet paper rolls, but I don't know how yet.
This week I finally finished the cutting out of my cardboard project... I so happy to be done with this part but I know I want to add something. So I have been collecting water bottles (mainly green) to melt in my peice. I also made a back piece that is harder so it's not so floppy, this also gave me a border to melt the plastic. I'm hoping to use the heat gun to melt the peice and I'm a little scared it may not work, but I'm hoping for the best!
I have worked on my cardboard peice a little this week but not as much as I would of liked. I has been really crazy this week... I worked on the cardboard on Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday had to many twist and turns. On Wednesday not much art was done because there was the chance of tornados, therefore not many (including me) didn't pull out there art because we knew there was a high chance of having to leave quick. On Thursday we went the libary to make a design for a 3D printer. And Friday many were not done in the libary so the ones who were went to MR. SANDS to judge Art History Games. My 3D print is an fat elephant but I have no pictures of it because it has not been printed, sadly...
This week I took a break from my cardboard project, I still have the same plan... It was just starting to get boring. So instead I worked on the pottery wheel, although the wheel is entertaining and messy I learned it wasn't for me... I found it hard to center and even harder to shape there fore I let the next person use it. I still knew the pit fired project was coming up so I wanted to work with more ideas with clay. And after seeing some pieces I really wanted to make a geometric shape... Sadly after cutting all the pieces out I realized that the pieces didn't fit together and I really wasn't loving it.
I worked on both of these things for most of this week and picked up my main project a few times. Next week I plan to work on my main project and try to finish it. I know it's been a slow week for my project, but sometimes the artist needs to step back, before they lose interest in the piece. This week I have been working on the cardboard tree. It has been taking longer than I had expected and I have been having trouble cutting out the leaves. When I began cutting I was hoping to leave the tree/ circle on the wavy level of the cardboard and the recycling sign on the last level. The cardboard had different plans... Now the tree is on the the last level and the recycling sign is cut all the way through. This has really made me frustrated and I was almost tempted to start over, but I continued and found it gave it a distressed look.
I also glazed my clay tile that I had done the first week of the semester, I find myself really happy with my tile. I made a tree trunk and used an underglaze to give a darker and distress look, and then I used a dark brown and clear glaze on top of it. I had to touch the glaze up after the first time in the kiln because I had missed a spot when using the brown glaze. As my first project I have decide to work with Scupture 1 theme relief, but with an Unconventional Material twist. At this point I know I want to work with cardboard and do a recycling theme, but I don't know what design I'm going with. I'm also thinking of doing a series, but I would like to use different materials such as wood or plastic cups. I have good luck with working with cardboard but I have never used it in this big of scale. I would also love to to do splatter paint on this piece. I know this plan will change 100 times, but I can't wait to finish.
Name: Anastassia Elias
Info: Paris based artist that typically works in mediums of painting and illustration, but she recently undertook where she is working with toilet paper rolls.. Website: anastassia-elias..com Picking a ConcentrationMany were easy to get rid of because they would of been hard to do for a whole semester, but at the same time I had a hard time choosing my concentration. I loved the idea of nature but I felt it was done to much, therefore that idea got crossed out. I also loved the idea of making something of broken glass, but that was already someone's idea. I choose Unconventional Material as my concentration, because I had worked with it in semester on and feel in love with it.
Unconventional MaterialIn this piece I had a few challenges, after making the four sides of the lamp I realized that the sides didn't fit together correctly. To make the sides fit I had to make a base and work up. I also had issues with making the actual lighting. I loved the light effect the piece makes when the light is on. In the future I may paint the bottle cap (that is holding the light) white so the red doesn't shine through. I picked to make a lamp because I had needed one for my room and felt the clothespin was perfect. I had thought about making a clothespin dress but when I was getting ideas online I found that was common, therefore I went with the original idea of the lamp.
Origami Installation We created the cranes through origami, the only difference is we used very large pieces of paper. After folding the origami into cranes we thought as a class it would be great to hang them in flocks in the main lobby. Once we began to hang the cranes, we learned it was harder than we had expected it to be. We quickly learned that patience was key. When we finally got all the cranes on a string, we began to tie them so they were facing one point. As we were hanging the second flock the first fell, and then more and more continued to fall as we went on. The process of planning the cranes was much easier than making than making the actual product.
