I had many challenges during this project, because I had placed the clay to thin inside the mold. This made it very difficult to keep the halves together, the ear kept falling apart. I found the smoothness of the face very successful about my piece, but if I could do it over again I would of laid the pieces in the mold thicker and worked more on the handle. My piece is a vessel because is is a mug, which also makes it functional.
I felt the mold process was extremely difficult, but also very entertaining. First I thought that molds were kind of cheating, but the I realized that it was difficult because the pieces were fragile. I thought my piece was successful and I used it for my vessel project (after adding a twist). I feel that the smoothness of the face made my peice successful. For this piece I wanted the form of the piece to be just as cool as the possible unique color. Therefore, I added unique shapes too the cylinder shape. I love this style of work because you don't know what your going to get. The process of the leaf was suppose to be pretty simple, roll out the slab, roll leaf into the slab, the fire and paint, but of course like most art it became more complicated. I was ill for a few days which gave my piece time to mold and me less time to give it shape. The when fired the leaf cracked and didn't fit back together correctly. I saw this as such a good issue, but really it is what made my piece special. I had hot glued the pieces back together and painted the glue gold. I feel as if my piece was very successful because it turned out different. If I could of done anything different I would of pit fired the leaf pieces. Mrs. Sudkamp's demo lead me to this piece. |
